The field of information technology (IT) is constantly expanding as computerized information systems are used more and more in business and other organizations and the systems become more powerful and complex. The use of the Internet as a tool for business promotion and sales has also grown rapidly and e-commerce is an area which very few businesses choose to ignore. Business promotion, sales and marketing, and education are increasingly conducted online. As a result of this growth there are excellent opportunities nowadays for those hoping to make a career in information technology. Because careers in IT require a solid foundation of technical know how you require some formal education to get started in your career and an associate program will give you a solid grounding in the many areas of knowledge you will need to master.

An associate program may offer a range of subjects, but you will certainly focus on areas such as computer programming, how databases are constructed and managed, and the technology, both hardware and software, that makes systems and networks operate. The knowledge you gain will enable you to write simple computer programs of your own, install software, work with database management systems, understand how networks operate, and handle a range of software applications. You may also take some courses to develop your understanding of the way organizations and people work.

Information technologists perform a wide range of jobs. They may construct and manage databases, be responsible for management information systems, design and install computer networks, and ensure that those networks function and are used efficiently. These are all key areas for many businesses, and trained and skilled people are in demand.

There are positions within IT open to holders of degrees at all levels. As the holder of an associate degree you will be able to apply for entry and mid-level positions in information technology, on either the technical or the managerial side of things. Almost all organizations need IT skills in one form or another, so there will be opportunities in business, education, government, financial institutions and the Internet, among others. And as information technology and the Internet will continue to grow qualification in IT should open up a career path with very good future prospects.

An associate degree will also provide you with a springboard to move on to further qualifications which will open a wider range of opportunities for more senior posts.
