European Studies/Civilization "Programs based on modern European studies are usually multi-disciplinary, and broad-based. They trace the artistic, cultural, economic, and scientific development trends of Europe and use these to put present day cultural, political and legal issues into context. This kind of course is often run as a supplement for traditional majors, giving a background for a broad liberal education - an excellent background for students who are preparing themselves for careers in public affairs, in the arts, or in business fields.
Subjects studied vary from program to program, but will typically include European art and art history, the development of economic thought, the development of science and the scientific method, European literature, European languages, the politics of industrialized states, war and violence in Europe. Students in these programs will also study selected periods of history from different European countries, international relations inside and outside Europe, the Renaissance and the development of modern philosophy.
