"Various animal training programs are available in a variety of higher educational institutions. Most courses are designed for people who want to work in zoos or with animals for specific performance needs, such as movies or presentations. The subject areas studied for these programs generally include animal care and hygiene, nutrition, restraint - methods and consequences, veterinary procedures, animal psychology, presentation of animals for educational and entertainment purposes, and often some issues related to animal training such as fund-raising, supervision and other topics of this nature.
Most courses involve a practical element, often spent in a zoo or an entertainment park. This is usually for a reasonable proportion of the course. Indeed some institutions are associated with a public or private zoo. At the end of an animal training course the student is expected to be able to handle a range of animals, and be aware of their needs and wants in the situations they are likely to be working in."
