The Difference that Lasts Forever: Early Childhood Education By Alan Drummer

A population boom in the number of children entering school has made "preschool teacher" one of the fastest growing job categories, according to the US Department of Labor. Choose to get an early childhood education degree, and you can help keep class size small by entering the field. The rewards don't stop there.

What a unique difference you make by being the only adult guiding one of a child's early years in school. What you say and what you do has a huge impact in how children feel about themselves, school, and learning. Some of the attitudes and habits you set in them will last a lifetime, without them realizing where it ever started.

Think about the way you feel towards books, or the way you use a pencil or scissors. Where was that set?

A Wonderful Attitude

Around you will be children who in many cases will be earnest, straightforward and sincere - it's often too early for them to have taken on the jaded, seen-it-all, critical outlook that peers and the media will eventually give them.

Instead, each day you can see the glow in some child's face as he or she gets an important concept. You're probably thinking about the field of early childhood education because you love learning. You can share that love.

What Does an Early Childhood Education Degree Consist Of?

As one educator said, you can't be taught how to teach. You can be taught how to learn how to teach once you get on the job. Early childhood education degrees give you the theory and practice tips that become meaningful and guide your choices during your all-important practice teaching.

Even an early childhood education online degree typically includes live student teaching experience. Here are some of the topic areas typically covered in a degree:
  • Assessment & Early Intervention. Learn how to survey a child's strengths and weaknesses, and how to offer appropriate support and encouragement.
  • Childhood Development & Discipline. How children learn at different stages is a fascinating topic. Learn some of the best practices for keeping order and managing behavior problems.
  • Lesson Planning & Curriculum. The rising importance of testing makes wise planning critical.
  • Teaching Methods & Practices. Different children are reached in different ways. Learn from experience what some of the best approaches are.
