Culinary School: America is Hungry for Fresh Ideas

Culinary School: America is Hungry for Fresh Ideas By Alan Drummer

Opening a restaurant is like making a movie. It's taking a big, expensive chance. Most efforts fail. But if you manage to do it right, customers will line up around the block.

Seeing that people crave your cooking is exciting and satisfying. The work is hard, but extremely creative. That's why culinary arts school is often appealing.

More and More Diners

The US Department of Labor forecasts that the number of people dining out will increase, as a bigger percentage of the population retires, and as others have less time available to eat at home.

To serve American diners, there are already over 132,000 chef and head cook jobs, and that number is predicted to grow. A culinary arts school degree will help prepare you to win one of those positions.

Broad Exposure to Chefs and Cuisines

Some have said that the way to become a chef is to train on the job. But in chef school, students learn from many different chefs and study many cuisines, instead of just a few. As one observer noted, cooking school doesn't train people, it teaches people. Students can question their teachers and the teachers can demonstrate something over and over until the student understands. A culinary school has the time and resources. A restaurant may not.

Explore Tasty Topics

Chef training courses will expose you to questions like these: Why is a recipe great? How do the foods in a recipe work together? What complementary foods make a great menu? How do you turn cooking talent into a successful restaurant career?

Mouthwatering coursework might include:

  • Principles of Cooking
  • Soups, Stocks, and Sauces
  • Accompaniments and Side Dishes
  • Principles of Flavor
  • Appetizers and First Courses
  • Specialty Cuisines
  • Baking Pastry School: Desserts and Breads
  • Charcuterie, Smokehouse, and Condiment Techniques
  • Healthy Cooking Approaches
  • Externships at Local Restaurants
If culinary school is your destination, you can know that America's eyes and plates are waiting for your work.
