The advent of online learning has radically changed education in the last ten years. In fact, online courses have been available from as early as 1989, and even before. Universities were quick to realize the potential and there is now a wide range of online degrees available for consideration.

However, the Internet is far more than an alternative delivery medium for typical students considering how and where to take their degree. The diversity of resources and information available via the Internet allow anyone who has access to a PC with Internet connectivity to pursue an education; whether it is a child needing academic help or a company executive completing an online MBA.

Executive Dilemma

U.S. census statistics show that nearly 60% of executives, managers and administrators have at least an Associate degree and the earnings gap between degree-holders and those without a formal degree is significant. Bachelor degree holders earn, on average, 43% more than their non-graduate peers. Master's degree holders earn a further 13%. With the advent of online technology, earning an online degree can be a financial and practical solution for executives wishing to improve their promotion prospects and salary potential. In addition to 100% online schools, many respected campus schools offer online versions of their tried and tested campus degrees and employers often look favorably on the dedication and initiative shown by an employee willing to work and educate himself or herself at the same time.

Parents Predicament

Any parent will testify to the difficulty in scheduling even one full day per week to devote totally to something other than work or children. For single parents especially, working full-time and earning a degree can seem like an impossible dream. However, online programs allow students to create their own schedule, studying when and where they want to with no requirement to dedicate a whole day to studying. By utilizing messaging and emails, attending lectures downloaded from the internet, and participating in chat-room tutorials, most students can complete courses in two or three hour slots several evenings a week, or at weekends . Even examinations can be taken online. For individuals who prefer some classroom interaction courses combining campus attendance and online instruction are also available.

Military Madness

Military personnel often move around a lot as part of their normal working life and study arrangements can present challenging logistical problems for the whole family. There are a number of online schools with specialist sections for the military. Incentives for military personnel include reduced fees, and help with financing a study program. Previous study and relevant experience may be taken into consideration as education credits, which count towards a new qualification. Of course, there is no administration involved in transferring credits with a move to a new military base, as the school remains unchanged. Many universities have counseling schemes to help you make the most of benefits available from government and military programs and the university itself.

Childhood Chances

Children, as well as adults, can benefit from the Internet education revolution. Online learning has some features that make it very suitable for certain subjects and situations. The student receives dedicated tutoring tailored specifically to his or her learning rate and ability. Such online interaction can be combined with real voice interaction with teachers to give children the individual time and attention that they enjoy and respond to. Math and reading are two subjects that are often tutored in this way. An online tutor offers kids the convenience of learning from the safety and comfort of home, or anywhere else their busy lives take them. Some companies are so confident of their proven methods that they guarantee that your child will improve the equivalent of one full grade-level in reading or math after only 36 hours of instruction.

Family Food for Thought

The Internet crosses the generation gap and pervades all walks of life. Whether it is used by an adult earning an online degree or a child participating in online tutoring to catch up, keep up or get ahead at school; the Internet is an amazing and versatile education tool to be embraced by the whole family.
