One a recent stop on the campaign trail, Democratic candidate for president John Kerry spoke to the Rainbow/Push coalition, a politically motivated minority advocacy group. He tried to energize the coalition by promising to step up efforts to ensure greater minority access to higher education. While stressing that the current low rate of college attendance by minorities is worrisome, he advocated more spending to ensure that minorities were given every educational opportunity possible. He promised to spend $300 million to encourage girls and members of minority groups to study science and math in programs like all-girls math and science schools and to double the $95 million budgeted for National Science Foundation graduate scholarships.
Also in attendance at this effort to rally the minority electorate was Jesse Jackson, a leader in the Rainbow/Push coalition. Jackson echoed Kerry’s sentiments on education and spoke in support of Kerry’s candidacy.
