Bush to Scale Back Pell Grant Program

Bush to Scale Back Pell Grant Program

Press Release, American Council on Education
April 7, 2004
http://www.acenet.edu/hena/readArticle.cfm?articleID=591

The Pell Grant has been a mainstay for college students in need of financial aid for many years. Pell grants are generally awarded to students who demonstrated financial need in their undergraduate years. Generally, the most a student can receive with a Pell Grant is $4,000.

Recently, President Bush called for the scaling back of the Pell Grant program. If passed, Bush would limit the number of years students would have to complete their degree. For students at four-year institutions, the president proposes an eight-year limit. Students at two-year institutions would have four years to complete their degrees.
