With the recent rash of mining accidents in West Virginia and Mexico, the spotlight has been thrown on the safety of this perilous position. But an Arizona firm has created a communications system that is touted as a major step in the right direction for miner safety.

Kutta Consulting, a firm based in Phoenix, Arizona, is creating the first communications system made expressly for the mining industry. The wireless communications device has been tested with success through 800 feet of solid rock. The United States government has been carefully eyeing the project in hopes that it will yield a communications system that will save lives in the future. The degree to which the new communications system will help remains to be seen. But at least miners and their families have something to pin their hopes on.

Positions for Communication Degree Holders

  • Funding: The communications project has received a high degree of funding in the form of a $730,000 grant.
  • High Tech Design: The communication system takes advantage of a PDA type readout with a powerful radio and antenna combination.
  • Audio and Video: Tests have successfully sent audio transmission through 800 feet of rock and video imaging through 400 feet.

If this technological advancement in communications gets you excited about the future, perhaps you should earn a degree in this hot career field. According to CareerAge.com, the communications field is wide open right now and looking for degree holders to fill critical positions.

The Communication Degree Up Close

  • Environment: Your communications degree will have you working primarily in professional office settings.
  • Outlook: As the field of communications continues to diversify, there will be a sharp increase in the need for degree holders in the next decade.
  • Education: The typical communications degree is a four year bachelor's program from an accredited institution.

Earn your communications degree and you could be making your own contribution to this vital profession.
