Become a School Teacher: the Right Teaching Program is Waiting By Alan Drummer

Because of population demographics, a huge wave of America's top teachers will retire by 2020. You can take their place and make a difference in others' lives in a fundamental way that few other jobs offer.

Remember the teachers that made a tremendous difference for you? A teacher with talent can make almost any course fascinating. A life can be changed as a student uncovers a passion.

As one expert said, a good teaching degree doesn't show how to teach. Rather it gives students theory and tips that prepare them to learn how to teach on the job. Being up in front of a classroom will teach you more than any book you'll ever discuss.

Several specialty areas are of interest:

Continuing Education Boom

As the US population gets older, one of the biggest demands, according to the US Department of Labor, is for continuing education teachers. There is often extra satisfaction in this job because adults can be more eager and appreciative learners.

Teaching Education

One of the biggest differences you could make is to teach teachers well. Perhaps you have a passion for working with people and bringing out their teaching talent. Maybe you have a passion for sharing how learning can be exciting. Schools of education benefit most from the most talented teachers available.

Teaching English

Teaching English as a Second Language is another skillset in great demand. Learn curriculum and instruction techniques that best gives people the gift of being able to take part in our culture.

These are the top reasons college graduates give for choosing to be a teacher:

  • Caring about children and seeing each one of them reach his or her potential.
  • Having a passion for teaching and enjoying the sense of mission.
  • Being good in a particular subject and sharing that enthusiasm with children.
  • Coming from a family of educators or having teaching role models they want to emulate.

Seeing teaching as an opportunity to "give back." Many realize how selfless a number of their teachers were, and want to also work in a job where the rewards are more than a paycheck.
