Advertising: Springboard to Follow Creative Dreams

Article, Marketing Weekly, December 16th

In this week's issue of Marketing Weekly, Caroline Parry discussed how many who begin their careers in the advertising industry leave to pursue individual passions. Parry determined that there were generally three reasons why people left the industry for greener pastures:
  1. They became disillusioned with the industry and moved on.
  2. They left with others to pursue a business venture. Ideas for these ventures are often created in the process of creating marketing/advertising plans for clients.
  3. They leave to pursue individual creative pursuits.

Some of the more famous examples of the third career path include Salman Rushdie and Hugh Grant. Both worked in marketing and advertising before pursuing individual careers. In her analysis of this trend, Parry suggests that the creative side of advertising lends itself to other creative endeavors, which can often garner more money and fame, such as writing, acting, or performing.

Creativity, by nature, doesn't fit in any particular box. Similarly, creative talents in advertising often need outside creative outlets apart from thinking up cool ad campaigns for clients.
